Penzance had its pirates long before Gilbert and Sullivan
immortalized the town. The pier and the fort were built in the 17th
century to protect the area against them. Earlier, the town was also
sacked and destroyed by the Spanish. Penzance now is a busy, popular
resort with a climate so mild that sub-tropical plants flourish here
throughout the year. Sir Humphrey Davy, inventor of the miner's safety lamp, was born here, and there is a statue to him in Market Jew Street. The Natural History and Antiquarian Museum in Penlee Park (open daily) offers a good history of the town, and the Museum of Nautical Art in Chapel Street (open April -October) has exhibits from sunken treasure ships as well as displays of local shipbuilding. Three miles along the road which skirts Eastern Green, there is along stretch of safe, sandy beach at Marazion, a jumble of cottages among winding streets, and palm trees. Dominating the small market town is St Michael’s Mount, one of the main tourist attractions of Cornwall. St. Michael's Mount is a quarter of a mile offshore, it is a 363-ft granite island topped by a castellated castle which dates from the 14th century. Connected to the mainland at low tide by a causeway and at high tide (in summer only) by a ferry, the castle is open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays (on Mondays also in summer), It is the residence of Lord St.Levan From the terrace there are line views of the Cornish coastline from the Lizard to Land’s End. A dog ban is in place on Penzance Promenade ( to Lariggan river) between Easter and October. |
