Crediton was an Anglo Saxon community which in the year 909 it
became Devon's cathedral city until 1050 when Exeter took the function.
The name Crediton is believed to derive from the Saxon “Kirton” meaning
“Church Town”.
The history of the town can be traced back over 1300 years to the birth
of St Boniface
His work led to Crediton becoming the seat of the Saxon Bishops of
Devon. A wooden cathedral was constructed and the seat remained in
Crediton until Bishop Leofric moved to Exeter in 1046 because the city
was easier to defend against Viking raids.
By the 12th century Crediton was renowned for its fine quality wool.
Like the other towns of Devonshire’s Heartland, however, Crediton
suffered when the wool trade began to decline in the early 19th century.
During the 16th century Crediton was occupied by the peasant army of the
Prayer Book Rebellion.
In the Reformation of 1549 the new Book of Common Prayer was introduced
against the wishes of many ordinary people. In response the peasants of
the Crediton area raised an army and launched an assault on the
cathedral city of Exeter before eventually being forced into submission.

Sea fishing at Seaton and Sidmouth. Boats can be hired from the beach at Sidmouth and Beer. The best time for fishing at Seaton is between Sept and Nov for bass. Sidmouth Bay is best in spring and summer. Trout fishing on stretches of the Rivers Exe, Otter and Sid. Coarse fing on the Exeter Canal.
