Cullompton a market town once on the coaching route to Bristol is an open
and pleasant town, now quiet since the M5 took the through traffic off the A 38

The 16th and 17th century wool trade provided the wealth of Cullompton evidence of which may be seen in the the fine parish church of St Andrew's.
The Civil War saw the town change hands several times. Charles I reviewed his troops here in 1644, while his wife Henrietta Mans passed through on her way to Falmouth, from where she embarked to France.

The market used to be the largest cattle market in the Southwest until 1957.
Across the road are the council offices which were once the town’s police station. Inside is an original cell with a heavy iron door and peep hole which can be inspected on request.
Along the street is Belle Parade, where French naval prisoners were paraded between 1805 and 1812.
