Plymouth has grown so rapidly since the 1939-45 war that it would be easy to forget that this is one of the great places of British Seafaring history. The bombing of the city caused such devastation that the centre had to be re-built.

The Hoe where Drake played his famous game of bowls before dealing with the Spanish Armada. The Mayflower Steps in the historic Barbican where the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from to America in l621, the links with Hawkins, Raleigh, Frobisher, and, of course, the magnificent natural harbour which remains with very little change.
The City Museum in Drake Circus (open daily) has a fine collection of exhibits illustrating the city’s history.
Plymouth has many fine shops and interesting historic houses and gardens to visit.
