Dorchester is the county town of Dorset, to the south is Weymouth with Wareham to the east.

Walks on Dorset’s best-known prehistoric ridgeway path begin on the B3143. about 2 miles north-east of Dorchester. Signposts point west along a chalky track over barrow-strewn heights to Charminster. and eastwards to an alder-hedged. poppy-lined bridle-way to Puddletown.
