Ilminster town owes its existence like so many others to wool and the religious orders that developed the trade and later to the local land owners that continued and developed it on industrial lines. Ilminster's location on the London to Exeter coaching road now known as the A303 and its status as a market town ensured its continued status into modern times. Now bypassed it provides a more relaxed centre for local business and visitors to the area.
