Langport set in the Somerset Levels owes its origins to being on a crossing point on the River Parrett. When the water levels were higher than today the community developed on the high ground. The river provided good transport for travellers and goods and a port was established. As water levels dropped due to silting of the river and draining of the land to provide for agricultural activities the port ceased to be used and roads and tracks developed still centred on the small town. Today the history can still be seen in the architecture and layout of this town and its location along side the river provides for pleasant cycle rides and walks.
