Watchet is a quiet seaside resort, with fine cliffs to the west and
a sandy beach. For centuries this small harbour served the regions of
Exmoor and the Quantocks. Now decommissioned the harbour shelters and
services numerous leisure craft.
History records an undoubted connection with the smuggling activities of
the south west coast. The harbours importance declined in the 19th
century. To the south-west are the remains of 12th century Cleeve Abbey,
with its fine refectory and gatehouse.
The West Somerset Railway passes through the centre of the town helping
to bring visitors to what is a gem of the Somerset Coast
