Blandford Forum exhibits an unusually uniform town centre of the Georgian period. Unusual as such rural towns normally exhibit phases of development over the centuries. In this case a catastrophic fire in the 18th century devastated the town with the loss of 400 houses. Fortunately the rebuilding was well funded by generous benefactors and was under the control of two architect brothers producing the handsome brick and stone structures now present. The Town serves a large and diverse agricultural area and has close connections with the army camp that existed near by. |
