Sturminster Newton is an old market town located within the Blackmoor Vale with variety of house styles, red brick, thatch, whitened cob, stone and even some exposed Tudor-type timbering. It stands on a great loop of the river Stour which has a fine bridge with six arches that unite Sturminster with Newton.
Nearby Pentridge Farm was the birth place of 19th century poet William Barnes, who wrote Lindenlea. Thomas Hardy wrote "The return of the native" in a grey stone mansion, Riverside, on the outskirts of the town.
The thatch White Heart 18th century Inn and the perpendicular church has been enriched by modern artists. The 17th century town mill is still working.
The local country side provides numerous opportunities for walking and cycling.
